Over the course of past week, I focused on looking at examples of different websites for my original work. As I looked at examples I focused on some areas for my website such as hip, knee, back, quadriceps and hamstrings. Based on those areas of the body for different injuries with my mentor I want to learn certain exercises with those areas either separately or how they collaborate to produce pain in one area. In my mentor visit this week I want to get feedback on my website and change what needs to be changed and learn procedures to a variety of techniques in physical therapy. Researching videos of different exercises I could put on my website I found out there are so many per area of the body and based on body type and where the pain is-is what exercise may work or trying a new one. Through the next week in creating and organizing my display board for the research showcase I want to organize it in a way that is clear and efficient. Looking back at my research speech I realized in my future speeches I need to speak smoother and slower especially in beginning and work on the closing on my speech to make my audience be interested from beginning to end.
Over the past week I focused on researching focused areas and treatments for the low back. I learned that the three main types of muscles that correlate with the low back are flexors, extensors, and obliques (rotators) and all of them are used in everyday life, but in order to get each one stronger you have to use exercises focusing on that area. Based on this, I want to research more of what exercises deal with those muscles specifically to add them to my original work. Looking back at my interview earlier this month with Debra Quach, I wanted to look into the differences with working in sports physical therapy and pediatric with around the same age to see different approaches on working with those patients and limitations as well. Since pediatric is such a big age range I want to know what type of injuries they focus on. For my website for original work in regards to the design of the website I want to look at color schemes that are similar to mine, but also general types of colors for future use. Through the next week I want to start building the website and for the first visit seeing what she says about how it should look and include.
Over the past week, I spent time on preparing for original work, research showcase, and seeing a little bit of what I want to talk about with my mentor. My recent mentor is Amber Ingram, who is a clinic director at ATI Physical Therapy in Coppell, Texas. From my informational interview with her previously, I was really interested in her approach with patients and the process of dry-needling used in physical therapy and thought she would be really big help in learning more about physical therapy and through my original work and final product throughout the year, so I am excited to start working with her. Through preparing for showcase and original work, I came up with the design for the display board incorporating the color scheme I have started using, as well as the invitation and thinking of guests I want to invite. For original work, I have started looking at exercise videos on YouTube to see how other people approach it. Over the next week, I want to research types of exercises and approaches to treatment for a variety of injuries and find a website domain I want to use to start creating the outline of my website for original work.
Over the past week my main goal was researching different types of exercises that go with a variety of injuries. In my interview with Debra Quach, I learned the types of treatment that go with the knee in which she used for a patient after surgery. Also, in regards to the types during physical therapy I asked a friend, who had ACL surgery in his knee a couple of years ago. He said that with his physical therapist they did leg press exercises, calve stretches, worked with the theraband in order to get strength back, and exercises with a bosa ball while in physical therapy. From what I have heard and researched, injuries in the knee are not as long term as in the back. Based on research, I came up with an original work project in which includes creating a website of videos on how to do exercises correctly with the help of my mentor and including exercises in which I have asked people who have had physical therapy mainly in the low back, but also post surgical injuries. Through the next weeks, I want to look at examples of videos showing how to do exercises correctly, so I have an idea of how I want mine to look and research a variety of treatments for different types of injuries and what areas to focus on.
Over the past week I researched over the lumbar spine and specific techniques used for treatment. The technology used to diagnose the low back pain is an MRI in order to see the curvature of the spine and where the pain is in regards to anatomical angles in the back. Another technique used in physical therapy which I learned from an interview with Amber Ingram, clinic director of ATI Physical Therapy in Coppell, is called dry-handling. Dry-handling caught my interest because I never knew they used a type of needle in physical therapy or that needles had another purpose other than giving shots or taking blood. Also in regards to exercises used to treat the lower back the main way is to stretch the body and work on balance and core work. I have learned that the core is the general area where that pain starts for most patients from it being weak. Also, based on what I have heard from professionals and people I have talked to over the past week and earlier, in the beginning of physical therapy working on the bike is a good starting point when the physical therapist is getting something done quickly, then after the patient bikes the physical therapist works on the patient in order to give all their attention to them. Through the next week I want to research what types of things I could do for my original work project that deals with the lower back and ask questions about different treatments and exercises used specializing with the low back.
Over the past week I started looking deeper into the anatomy of lower back. In the past research assessment, I looked at an article in which dealt with the angular anatomy of the spine and focused on the low back. I began to understand how much goes into the lower back because it is a popular form of pain, but difficult to specialize in one area when in physical therapy and diagnosing it. This is because there are so many triggers, some that I do not know about yet because I have a basic understanding of the anatomy, but just from what I have heard and researched. I have heard of a boot causing it because the hips not being even from not wearing the right shoes from an injury of the foot, pain from not a strong core, or overuse of the back. I want to look into and ask my future mentor about some triggers and areas that correlate with the low back to cause pain. Also, research what types of treatments and exercises deal with healing the low back. Looking back at the interview I had with Maggie Marshall in September, I had some questions again over the specialization of areas in the treatment processes and the relationships built between patient and physical therapist. The relationship aspect is part of the reason I want to be a physical therapist because I love meeting new people and having the opportunity to get them stronger and be able to go back to their passion is my main goal because of my experience with my physical therapist and I want to be able to do the same with others.
Over the past week, I learned from a friend I dance with: that her lumbar spine pain came from the boot she had to wear from her injury in her foot. The boot caused her to have knee pain which led to her hip and transferred over to her lower back. Leaving her to not be able to use her back as much as she used to for dance. She was in physical therapy for her back which they used exercises emphasizing on the core in which helped, although she still has some pain when doing movements, such as back bends or an arabesque. Based on this, Rob Landel, a professor from USC in which I interviewed with, beginning of September, has articles he wrote that have to do with lumbar spine pain in which I want to look over in the next week. I want to know what causes it specifically in dancers that experience the pain. Looking back at my interview I had with an inpatient therapist at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation specializing in neuro patients, I reflected on the typical day in which how some physical therapists have flexible schedules and some do not depending on their specialization. In the specialization of sports physical therapy, there is more of a flexible time schedule so in the future I can be a physical therapist and be with my family at the same time.
This past week, was the business symposium at Independence High School. During this time, I had the opportunity of interviewing with two professionals. One was a journalist named Jamie Saunders and during the interview she told me that she uses the education from college, in her work every day. I have been wondering how much education from college is used in work so it was great to hear and learn how in her specific job as a journalist she uses it. I am still wondering how much education from college is used in physical therapy. My other interview, was conducted with a photographer named Kim Ortiz who had a similar type of personality as me, so it was easier to connect with her and learn about her job, as well as her interview me about my passions in life and physical therapy. Based on these interviews and hearing other people’s stories about what the ISM program has opened up for them, with my mentor I have some questions for what I could do for my original work. Since, physical therapy is so broad of a field I am starting to think of some ideas for the project such as a website with videos and charts for treatment. Through these next weeks with at least two more interviews coming up and going to UNT, I want to ask and research over education, specializations, and treatment of the lumbar spine and other areas.
Over the past week I had two interviews with outpatient sports physical therapists. One with Maggie Marshall at Institute for Sports Rehabilitation at the Carrell Clinic and another with Brett Holland at ATI Physical Therapy. Over the course of these interviews, my goal was to gain knowledge about the relationship aspect of physical therapy and how they document each visit. The knowledge I gained from these interviews made me want to ask questions to my future mentor about how they go through each part in a visit through a physical therapist's perspective rather than what I have previously gone through, a patient's perspective. Thinking about my goals for the year in ISM and the time limit in which I want to achieve them, has given me a look at the future which includes confirming a mentor, coming up with an original work project, and later revising original work and creating a final project at the end of the year. I am so excited for what is to come as well as, when I have a mentor experiencing what being a physical therapist is like. For another interview, I want to gain knowledge about if they have had a patient with lumbar spine pain because I want to focus on that for my topic specialization this year.
Based off the interview I had with Rob Landel, I began researching for my topic this year. I want to focus on how to prevent and treat lower back pain in athletes because Dr. Landel had talked about how it is a major problem among athletes that is hard to focus on. Creating my portfolio and finalizing my résumé the past week, I have learned more about professionalism; in regards to showing research throughout the year and putting it in a résumé for a possible mentor to see. Also, I learned how important it is for new skills to come out of experience rather than focusing on getting through school. Based on past interviews, they have talked about how physical therapy departments look at observation hours and classes other than specifically science and math. I learned from research and interviews that classes such as sociology and psychology drive someone apart from someone who did not take those classes and focused on classes specifically towards physical therapy. When I heard that taking those classes and ones similar to them is a big part, I was happy to know I’m on the right track from taking AP psychology last year and sociology this year. Over the next week, I want to focus on the topic of lower back pain to gain knowledge about the anatomy of the injury as well as what other areas connect.
