Over the course of the past week I had an informational interview with Bruce LaMotte, a physical therapist at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation who works in inpatient therapy with neuro patients. Through the interview, I established the difference between inpatient and outpatient therapy, as well as a normal day of a physical therapist. With the information I gained from the interview, I then researched the difference between inpatient and outpatient therapy, as well the difference between his treatment specifically in rehab with neuro patients and treatment of athletes. Thursday, I had an interview and campus tour at the University of Southern California (USC) with Rob Landel, a professor of clinical physical therapy in the division of biokinesiology and physical therapy. Through the interview with him I became more interested in pediatric therapy. I now am researching more into pediatric physical therapy knowing that it deals with all specializations and ages 21 and under. As I researched the technology used in physical therapy I wanted to know more about the use and which new technologies are used in treatment. Through informational interviews over the next weeks I have questions over what kinds of technology they use in their specific specialization. Based on those interviews, I want to look deeper into the specializations of physical therapy, specifically pediatric, sports, and neuro because they have started to interest me as I have gained new knowledge from professionals and articles.
Through this last week I set up two informational interviews. One with Bruce LaMotte who works at the Baylor Institute of Rehabilitation in Frisco, TX and another with Maggie Marshall who is a physical therapist at Institute for Orthopaedic Sports Rehabilitation at The Carrell Clinic in Dallas. I am very excited and nervous to start interviewing professionals in physical therapy. Also, I am going on a college visit to the University of Southern California and I emailed the professor of the physical therapy program, Rob Landel, to meet with him while I am there and learn more about the program. Some of the research I am looking at within physical therapy is the therapy processes such as exercises and stretches they conduct to each exercise. I am wondering this because there are so many different types of injuries and body types so I want to know how each treatment is conducted on patients. Along with sports physical therapy I am also thinking of specializing in rehab for sports or car accident injuries because it would be interesting to see how after a car accident, physical therapists treat patients to get back to be as healthy as possible.
I’m so excited to be starting the ISM program studying physical therapy. Through these past two weeks I have already accomplished and learned new things. First, setting up Linkedin, I’ve connected with physical therapists in the area and ones who are professors at certain colleges I am looking at, such as University of Southern California(USC). At first it was intimidating to connect with professionals, but became less intimidating as more connected with me. Through creating my digital portfolio, I learned how to organize a website and build on my passion; showing publically what I’m going to accomplish through the program and under my mentor. I’m learning so much about physical therapy and interestingly working with patients with cardiopulmonary issues. Based on those certain patients, I’m wondering how physical therapists treat cardiopulmonary issues because it's different from regular injuries. I only knew before of pediatric and sports rather than the other specializations physical therapists can go into. Also, I found out pediatric physical therapy specializes with children with muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and developmental delays in which I never knew before. Through these next weeks, I want to look deeper into the certain aspects of sports and pediatric physical therapy to see what those specializations encompass and get in contact with professionals in those areas.
